From the Publisher
This volume presents the major documents on catechesis
that have been promulgated since the Second Vatican Council. It is an
essential reference book for catechists, clergy, teachers, pastoral
leaders, and for students of catechesis. The collection invites its
readers to appreciate the progress of catechesis in the mind of the
church and in practice over the course of the past decades. It also
encourages consideration of how the documents coming from the Vatican
for the universal church have been appropriated by the Catholic Church
in the United States. Each document is preceded by a general overview
that describes the origin, contest, and contribution of the document.
Review
According to John Ruskin, “If a book is
worth reading, it is worth buying.” The Catechetical Documents
is one such book. This volume is a collection of the major catechetical
documents that have been promulgated from the Second Vatican Council
up until 1993. In addition, each document is preceded by a general overview
that contextualizes the document describing its origin and contribution
as well as the challenges it holds out to the practice of the catechetical
ministry in the United States.
The Catechetical Documents is a resource that every
parish center and catechetical leader should have in their library.
It is also a volume that anyone in the United States concerned with
understanding and appreciating the mind of the Church on “sowing
the seeds of faith” should find both enlightening and challenging.
In this reviewer’s judgment, it is certainly worth the time it
takes to read, and thus, worth the money it takes to buy.
