John Powell, S.J.
John Powell, a Chicago native and member of the Society of Jesus, is currently a retired professor of Theology at Loyola University in Chicago. He has been awarded academic degrees in the Classis (Latin and Greek), English, Philosophy, and Theology; his doctoral degree was conferred on him by the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He has taught at the Jesuit Seminaries of West Baden, IN; North Aurora, IL; and St. Mary’s, KS. He also taught at the Catholic University of America, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of San Francisco. Father Powell has published 21 theological and psychological books, which have been translated into more than 30 languages. They also appear in the Bicentennial Reading List, which lists “the most significant books published in the history of the United States.” Currently the second best-selling Christian author in the history of the United States, John Powell ranks just behind one of his personal heroes, C.S. Lewis. Among his many awards, Father Powell was awarded the Journalism Award from the Catholic Press Association for the Best Article published in a Catholic Magazine during that year. John Carroll University gave him its “American Values” award for his work in writing, speaking, and television. Also in 1982 Loyola Academy of Wilmette, Illinois gave him its Daniel A. Lord award for “Service to Youth.” In 1986, John Powell received the St. Athanasius award of the Manresa Educational Corporation for his work in the field of theology; also in that year Marquette University conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in recognition of his publications and media work. He also received an honorary doctorate from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts and the St. Francis Xavier Medal from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. John Powell continues to support the pro-life movement. He sees respect for every human life, born and unborn, as the crucial test of our humanness and of our recognition of the sovereignty of God. |
